Marked Tree Family

The Spirit of Marked Tree is about finding your path.

Early in American history settlers noticed oddly shaped, bent trees in the landscape. These odd shaped trees were formed and created by Native Americans to be guideposts through the wilderness, a guide to water, a guide to food, a guide to hunting - a navigation system.

In 2015 we were in search of our own path, a Marked Tree. We wanted a place where all our family’s different paths could cross and converge. Our passion for farming , meeting new people, creating new experiences and of course WINE led us here.

We hope you enjoy time at Marked Tree Vineyard. Whether you are choosing a new path, enjoying your current path or looking for a new exciting one- enjoy the next marker of your life with a great bottle of Marked Tree wine. Cheers!

Great wine starts in the Vineyard

At Marked Tree most of what we do in the vineyard is done by hand. In the morning we usually get out to the vineyard as the sun is coming up, still cool and quiet. Springtime we tuck and tie the new shoots, pushing through the wires of the trellis system, trying to create the optimum micro climate for each vine to thrive. As Summer approaches the vines are bound to the trellis and begin to reach every direction, searching for sunlight. When the vines try to overgrow their trellis we pull out the shears and hedge. We hedge and hedge the vines, trimming them to the linear shape of the trellis system. Beautiful rows of topiary. Seemingly overnight the grapes begin to appear- hidden behind large green foliage. For optimal flavor, tannins, and sugars, the grape clusters need sun. We hand pull and thin the leaves away from the tiny grape clusters to allow dappled sunlight to work its magic! Finally we get to Harvest. Harvest is a mysterious time of the year. The fruit has to be picked at the correct ripeness, during the best conditions and, at Marked Tree, in the Dark. Walking through the vineyard, watching the moon rise, filling harvest bin after harvest bin after harvest bin is quite spiritual.

Site driven

The siting of the vineyard is probably the most important aspect to a quality grape. The site’s climate, soil, elevation, days of sunlight all contribute to grape and wine quality. Marked Tree is located at an elevation of 2300 feet on the Eastern Continental Divide. The elevation allows air circulation that helps suppress disease and spring frost. Southern exposure helps the vines to optimize the daily photosynthesis. Western Exposure ripens the Cab Franc and Lemberger. The slope of the land helps the water drain away from the vineyard in a region known for high rain totals. The Rocky, Sandy loam soil adds an element of struggle to the vineyard. Struggle is good for the vigorous vines.

The Marked Tree selection of grape varietals came from the site’s strengths. We selected Varietals that would ripen each season with our warm days and cool nights. We also selected Varietals that would survive the Blue Ridge winters. This is the essence of terroir.

Good design

Leather, wood, steel, concrete, stone, glass, light. Elements we brought together to heighten your wine experience. Modern clean lines framing views to the organic forms of nature. Our approach to design was to allow our clients to see, smell, taste the best of what the Crest of the Blue-ridge has to offer. We strive to create a sense of place that will draw you back again and again to celebrate special moments of your life, moments along your path.

Slow down, enjoy your path.
